During the past, I tried the infamous “Master Cleanse” (MC) which many Hollywood stars use when losing weight for a role or before they hit the red carpet. I remembered when Oprah was interviewing Beyonce about her MC experience when she was shooting the movie Dreamgirls. From what I remembered during that interview was Beyonce’s experience sounded about as miserable mine. I found the MC a bit cruel.
The Master Cleanse consists of only drinking a concoction made of lemons, maple syrup, water and cayenne pepper…and that’s it! No food. There was an option to drink salt water or take laxatives to help your body dispel toxins. Otherwise, I just drank this lemonade potion several times for 10 days and suffered. (I told you it was cruel!).
However, a proper detox and purification cleanse is important to do at least once or twice a year. Our bodies fills up with toxins from the environment, food and stress. A purification program gives the body a chance to dispel those toxins, boost the immune system and reboot the digestive system. However, the MC does not help us to detox and purify in a healthy, sustainable way.
Here are the 5 Reasons to Avoid the Master Cleanse:
1.) Losing weight is common on the MC. However, generally people gain the weight back after it is over. Sometimes people gain even more weight then when they started the MC. During the MC the body is deprived of food, therefore, most people’s bodies will eventually go into starvation mode over time. The body will start storing fat. The MC can also change the metabolism making it harder to LOSE weight afterwards.
2.) The MC does not teach participants how to sustain a healthy eating lifestyle. After the MC is over, there is nowhere to go. For instance, after the 21 day Standard Process cleanse, there is an opportunity to adopt new healthy clean eating practices. It is more likely for people to adopt some of the new clean eating habits and sustain them over time.
3.) The MC does not use supplements to support the organs through the detox process. As the liver or any other organs are dispelling toxins, they need to be supported. If the organs are slow to move out the toxins, the body does not spends as much time purifying or helping the body lose weight. Supplements supports this process by promoting elimination and providing a healthy gastrointestinal environment for the detox to take place.
4.) Participants miss out on the joy of food experimentation and discovery. Thankfully, Earth provides everything needed to naturally detox the body. The MC limits the pallet to only lemons, cayenne pepper and maple syrup. However, doing a whole food cleanse forces us to be resourceful, learn new recipes and experiment with different dishes.
5.) The MC encourages starvation practices because the body is not getting any calories, except for the ones that come from the sugar in the maple syrup. Muscles break down and the body is weakened.
Overall, I found the MC pretty pointless for anyone looking to lose weight or adopt healthy eating and lifestyle practices. I did not learn very much about how to eat healthy. I probably lost about 7 pounds in one week, but felt very irritated and annoyed most of the time. Then, I gained all the weight back after the MC was over. Afterwards, I seriously hated lemons for about a year and vowed to never do a fast like that again! It wasn’t fair to lemons either because lemons have some incredible healing properties. But, it will be very difficult to appreciate lemons after the MC experience.
Some people love the MC and it may work for their bodies (or they do not mind starvation). But, at the end of the day, if a friend or family member asked me for my recommendation,
“I do not recommend the MC!”
