The Best Investment To Kickstart Healthy Living
Juicing is a small lifestyle change. But, it is an EXCELLENT way to start treating your body with love and support while changing your habits to a more healthy lifestyle. The body is a powerful instrument. It will self correct itself if given the opportunity. Most people who have a juicing practice will tell you that the healing benefits of juicing are beyond their expectations.
Why I Started Juicing
Back in 2008, I had just finished working one of the most intense jobs I have had to date. I was working in politics and we were in the middle of the campaign season, therefore, my workday rarely came to an end until Election Day. I was working 80-hour weeks, including weekends for nearly a year. I rarely had time to cook in a kitchen, which meant I was usually eating processed foods on the go. I tried to eat “healthy fast food” like Subway or salads from Wendy. But, I was rarely cooking whole foods and barely stopping to take the time to eat.
I was tired, irritable and cranky, although I was getting my job done. However, I was not having fun, I was constantly in a state of worry and anxiety. I relied on caffeine and sometimes energy drinks to keep me fueled throughout the day. Surprisingly, I slept fairly sound at night because I was so tired. But, then I would feel fatigued throughout the day, but would not stop to rest or take a nap. After Election Day, I had a few months in between positions and decided to use that time to focus back on my health and wellness. I knew I had gotten off track with my health. But, this time I wanted to learn tools that could help me sustain a healthier lifestyle.
My Introduction to Raw Foods
I decided to sign up for a yoga teacher-training program. I submersed myself in yoga for a few months and eventually started teaching. It was in my yoga teacher training program at Vastu School of Yoga in the Ft. Lauderdale area of south Florida, where I was first exposed to the benefits of juicing. One requirement of the yoga teachers training program was to sustain a vegetarian diet throughout the duration of the training.
Sometimes after our yoga weekend workshops, some of the teachers would go out for Indian food at the restaurant next door to the studio. One day my friend Naomi suggested we go to a raw food restaurant in the Lake Worth area of West Palm Beach. She said they served freshly made organic juices and dishes made out of raw vegetables and fruits. All the ingredients were organic and did not have any chemicals or pesticides.
I remember I had never been to a strictly raw food restaurant before. When we arrived, I ordered a fresh organic juice made of raw vegetables and fruits. I do not remember the ingredients of the drinks. But, what I DO remember is how GOOD I felt after leaving the restaurant.
Also, the rest of the evening, I felt peaceful, relaxed yet full. I remember describing the feeling as “a tickling in my body”. I felt giddy, happy, light and completely energized! It was shocking. This moment was a turning point for me. I truly understood how what we choose to eat and drink, directly affects not only our bodies, but also our mind and emotional well being.
Time For A Change!
After my yoga teacher training ended, I decided I really needed to look into buying more organic produce and start juicing. I wanted to feel rejuvenated, energized and peaceful again. I did not want to rely on a restaurant for this experience, instead I wanted to empower myself and learn how to create these drinks and dishes at home.
Once I started juicing, I became more connected to food. But, more importantly I became more conscious of HOW I felt after eating organic vegetables and fruits versus other foods. I started making a juice in the morning made of apples, spinach and ginger. I would either drink the juice with my breakfast or save it for a mid-morning snack before lunch.
I started to notice I had more energy throughout my day. I did not experience that late afternoon sluggish feeling I use to get around 3:00 p.m. -4:00 p.m. Over time I noticed my skin was glowing, my body felt lighter, I was not feeling gassy or bloated, I had regular bowel movements and I started to lose a few inches and pounds. I was not craving foods high in salt and sugar as much as before. I thought, “This juicing thing is THE WAY!”
It is important to get a high powered industrial juicer like the Vitamix 5200 or Magic Bullet (see panel on the right side of this page). Blenders are not high industrial machines. Generally, low grade juicers and blenders extract the pulp and remove a great deal of fiber. High powered juicers like Vitamix and Magic Bullets keep the fiber in the drink, which is extremely important (I discuss how important fiber is below). These products can break down the seeds, the skin of the produce down to a liquid form. This is why these juices are considered superfoods, (different from blended drinks that take out some of the most important nutrients in the vegetables and fruits).
Benefits of Juicing
There is so much mixed information in the media about diet, nutrition, exercise and food. We are constantly bombarded with information about the latest diet fad and exercise craze. But, one thing that is constant are the beliefs that vegetables and fruits have important nutrients we all need to stay healthy and the more whole foods we intake the better we are in a position to ward off diseases and preventable conditions. The more empowered people are in knowing what to eat, what their body responds to and how to take better care of it; they are empowered to do better in their wellness practice.
It helps detoxify the body
If food or drinks do not come in the form of whole foods, directly from the ground, tree or in Mother Nature, then it has probably experienced some form of processing. Processed foods (generally, foods in packages, boxes, cans) carry many harmful chemicals. Our bodies have a difficult time digesting and even understanding these chemicals since they are foreign to what our body is use to digesting.
When looking at the ingredients panel on the back of a box or bag, there are usually funny sounding, scientific names listed, such as Polybrominated diphenyl ethers or Acrylamide. Those are examples of processing chemicals that our body will not know how to digest, which can lead to a difficulty in weight loss, feeling lethargic and other imbalances. Juicing helps to dispel stored waste and toxins that can get in the way of your body’s organs from operating at an optimal rate.
Juicing adds large amounts of nutrients to your diet
It is more difficult to sit down and eat radishes, than throw them in a Vitamix and create a juice with them and other whole foods. Instead of attempting to eat several pounds of vegetables a day, in order to get the required nutrients for a balanced diet, why not juice those vegetables and get the same amount of nutrients in one or two drinks.
For instance, I use radishes in some of my juices because they aid in digestion and help eliminate toxins. But, normally, I would not consider eating radishes in a dish and would not prepare them outside of when I juice. I still want those healing benefits of radishes, so I just include them in my juice because I can barely taste them!
Juicing helps you learn about the natural healing properties of food
When I started juicing, I did not have much information about the natural healing properties of food. What I mean is that I did not fully understand how I could use whole foods and fruits to address ailments, pain or discomfort in my body. But, when I started juicing, I became more interested in vegetables because I had to make decisions on which ones to buy for my juices.
For instance, radishes can help relieve bloating and indigestion. Instead of suffering with indigestion and reaching for an over the counter medication, consider creating a radish juice. Sure, for some people it is just easier to pop a pill, but have you ever looked at the side effects and warnings of those over the counter drugs? But, instead of creating potential harm to the body by taking a pill, see if there is a way to “juice it out” by finding a food that has natural healing properties to address discomfort.
Juicing helps with weight loss, bloating and improving digestion
When juicing with a Vitamix or Bullet, the vegetables and fruits are broken down to micro nutrients, which makes it easier to digest because they are in liquid form. Also, when drinking fruits and vegetables the body feels full, which helps curb appetite and can result in weight loss.
